The logistics sector is one of the key sectors of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. Devised by the state in 2009, the logistics concept contains bold strategies and milestones in which the combination of modes of transport plays a dominant role. This concept includes terminals of the intermodal transport system such as the CTHS at the Port of Halle. Some extracts from the logistics concept and the download link for the overall concept are set out below.

Intermodal transport

"Intermodal transport is the term used to describe the carriage of goods using two or more modes of transport without a change of container. Interfaces between the modes of transport and a logistics concept for building up complete transport chains are essential if the system is to operate efficiently. The federal state government of Saxony-Anhalt supports "logistical interfaces" of this type at centres where large volumes of freight are received." (Logistics concept of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, page 20)

Status Quo

"A good example of this is the setting up of container trains as part of the intermodal transport of goods from the Port of Halle-Trotha to the North Sea ports of Hamburg and Bremerhaven. The number of containers handled initially has increased from 178 when the connection was introduced in 2002 to more than 45,000 containers in 2008 and there is no end in sight to the potential of this development. In order to consolidate this development access to the containers must be adapted to the normal standard in Halle-Trotha as in all other locations in the state. To that end the rail network operators concerned must specify appropriate requirements." (Logistics concept of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, page 56).
